These juvenile Black Marlin start off their time up north in the warmer water during the winter months and throughout the year you can follow their migration down the east coast of Australia.
They seem to stop and hang around certain areas for longer periods due to the masses of bait fish for them to feed on, lucky for us the Gold Coast is one of these stops and we usually see them in large numbers from December through to March although every year is different and they can show up earlier and hang around for longer too.
During this time of the year seeing double figures of 10 or more Black Marlin in a single day is certainly not an uncommon sight.
The fish usually range from 20 – 120kg and are a great experience and very fun to catch for anyone on lighter tackle.
Its not only about the Marlin, we are lucky enough to have gamefishing for most part of the year off the Gold Coast.
September through to January usually produces prolific numbers of Dolphin fish and of course our Spanish Mackerel arrive here on the coast around the December period too and they hang around for a few months.
We also get to see good catches of wahoo and yellowfin tuna so it always makes for an interesting day on light tackle and there is usually always some fresh fish to take home to the family and friends to sample.
